5 Ways to Get Rid of (or Dispose of) Your Old Mattress

old mattresses

It’s time to get rid of that old mattress. But how do you go about this, exactly?

You have a lot of options if you need to get rid of your old mattress. It’s not just about taking it off the bed and putting it on the curb for garbage pickup. There are some other, more environmentally friendly ways to go about this task.

Before you buy, consider these five ways to get rid of the old one.

Option 1: Sell Your Old Mattress Online

If your mattress is perhaps in decent shape, why not try to sell it on eBay, MyDeal, or other online marketplaces? No doubt there would be someone in the market for a new mattress at a discounted price.

If your is still in decent condition, you could have a little cash in your wallet to boot!

Option 2: Donate It to Your Local Charity or Offer it For Free

Some charities, such as Goodwill or Salvation Army, or homeless shelters will be more than happy to accept your used mattress, and that is if it’s still in decent condition. Some businesses may also offer free pickup for a mattress so you don’t have to hassle with it. Just call around and ask if they offer this service or not.

Or, you could put it out by the road in front of your house with a free sign attached and give it out for free.

Option 3: Repurpose it

If you love DIY, you could take your mattress and box springs apart and use a variety of materials that make up a mattress and box spring.

For one, the mattress springs could be sold for scrap metal. For another, you can separate out foam from a conventional mattress and use it in pillows or other upholstery. The wooden parts of a box spring could be used for furniture or other wood projects such as compost bin or lawn mulch, etc. Lastly, some organic cotton stuffing inside the mattress is very useful for pet beds, pillows, or for any type of stuffed animal toys.

If you have a coil spring mattress, you can use the coils and springs can be used for decoration either as they are or you can melt them and turn them into various objects plant and candle holders, ornaments, bird feeders, and much more.

When in doubt, you can check Pinterest out for some cool ideas.

Option 4: Recycle It

Recycling is surely the best environmentally friendly option to get rid of old mattresses. The good news is most mattresses can actually be recycled, 80% of all mattresses to be specific, according to Mattress Recycling Council.

Many local governments have recycling programs for mattresses or will work with you to find a company that can recycle them for you.

If you’re in the Sunshine Coast, or live in Australia for that matter, you can use any of the following services for mattress recycling:

  • Mattress Recyclers – They charge a standard fee of $60 for collection and they serve Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Brisbane and other coastal towns nearby. They also offer services in Sydney and have contact details on their website.
  • Recycling Near You – Here you can search for drop-off locations to recycle a wide range of items including electronic waste, batteries, printer cartridges, whitegoods, furniture and much more.
  • City resources – Contact your city waste management department for recycling options.

Option 5: Throw it Away

While not the most environmentally friendly option, this is still another option if you’ve exhausted all your options. However, still, this doesn’t mean you can just leave it next to your dumpster, or let a garbage truck pick it up. Be sure to with your local laws if such actions are permitted and if not, what options you have with getting rid of your mattress.

If part of the town where you live doesn’t allow disposing of your mattress with regular trash, and you have little budget, you can get in touch with waste disposal services like the one above or you can get free quotes on Airtasker website for free.
